Goodwood Revival – a very unique and magical weekend and an opportunity to travel back in time to experience what the Goodwood Motor Circuit would have been like when it was celebrated for being one of the most highly recognised and prestigious motor circuits around after the Second World War. This year marked 15 years of celebrating the tradition of Goodwood Revival.
However, this year exceeded all expectations when The Gentleman’s Journal was kindly invited to accompany the Jaguar team at the weekend. The invitation was not just to join them during the day mind you, it also included staying in the ‘Jaguar Mansion’, meeting some of the team and reliving the historic races with none another than the legendary, Norman Dewis, a man who has tested and developed 25 Jaguar models.
To top it all off, the Jaguar team entrusted us with some of their most renowned cars – the E-Type, the Mark II and Mark IV. We then put all of our faith in technology, as the satellite navigation system instructed us around the countryside. One mechanic commented on how you needed to feel the car and take your time when changing gear. Each car was so graceful and had its own unique presence on the road – these classic motors were a pleasure to drive.
The atmosphere at Goodwood Revival was mesmorising and it was a perfect opportunity to see some of Jaguar’s most desirable and beautifully designed cars, as well as the stunning new F-Type. As we looked on eagerly from the best viewing areas, we couldn’t help but feel torn between enjoying the competitive nature of the races in contrast to feeling slightly protective over wanting to preserve these iconic and classic cars, as they were hurled around the track in races such as the St Mary’s Trophy which still represents the saloon car race.
The experience reinforced how timeless, classic cars have continued to influence the car industry and we were spoilt by the sight of the endless array of old and new cars. Whether you enjoy classic cars, observing car races, or even prefer taking the opportunity to go back in time and feel like you are in the 40s, 50 or 60s; then you will make sure you book your ticket for next year’s Goodwood Revival.
