PABLO PICASSO
Arguably the first visual artist to become a millionaire during his lifetime, Picasso was celebrated as the co-founder of the Cubist movement and spent most of his life in France among influential writers of the roaring 20s. Regarded as one of the most influential artists of the 20th century, he didn’t hold back in his portrayal of political issues found in works like Guernica (1937) and Massacre in Korea (1951). He has created an estimated 50,000 works of art. His ever-changing style, from his famous Blue Period to the Rose Period and African-influenced period, shows his range of talent.
JEAN-MICHEL BASQUIAT
Passing away at the young age of 27, Basquiat left a massive world of work behind. Originally part of SAMO – a group of graffiti artists in New York City – he went on to develop his own style and was known for his social commentary on class struggle, race and power structures. His personal style was a unique mix of soft rebellion, while keeping a modern edge.
TERENCE KOH
Named one of Out magazine’s 100 people of the year, Koh is a Chinese-Canadian artist who completed his bachelor’s degree at Emily Carr University in Vancouver. His work includes sculptures, zines, prints, photographs, installation art and work influenced by queer and punk culture. His unique style is heavy on the white – furs, shirts, suits, glasses; everything white, all the time. Lady Gaga has also participated in a project titled ‘Boy by the Sea’, where she is wearing pearly white attire designed by Koh.
ANDY WARHOL
A well-known 1960s icon, Warhol spent a lot of his time at his infamous Factory between 1962 and 1984. With three different locations, the Factory was a place where many artists thrived. Home to many performers, musicians and poets, Warhol became part of a large counter-culture movement that gave birth to The Velvet Underground, Edie Sedgwick, Gerard Malanga, Betsey Johnson and many other people dubbed ‘superstars’. Highly influenced by pop culture and fashion, Warhol himself was noted for his simplistic yet chic New York style.
OSCAR MURILLO
Born in Columbia and currently residing in London, he has travelled the world giving students an opportunity to create art on canvases attached to their desks. His work incorporates physical elements of his studio, such as dust and debris. Earning his BFA from the University of Westminster, he is on the rise and slowly changing the way people interpret visual art.
