Why Everyone Should Watch ‘Girls’…Even Men

Why Everyone Should Watch ‘Girls’…Even Men

GIRLS - TGJ.00

Over the last few decades, if a man wanted to learn the “truth” about women, he could turn his attention to Carrie and the crew and could, quite frankly, learn an awful lot from Sex & The City (don’t pretend you’ve never watched it). It taught men a lot of things that men may or may not have known. It taught them that – news flash alert – women love shoes and cocktails and clothes (‘I like my money where I can see it – hanging in my closet.’- Carrie). It taught men that women generally move in intimidating circles of 4 and tell each other everything – literally everything – and talk about sex about as much as men think about it (The good ones screw you, the bad ones screw you, and the rest don’t know how to screw you – Samantha).

Despite its tell-all attitude and insight into the wondrous world of women it was, in fairness, a rather sugar coated version of females and the way they live. But then came Girls. The HBO series that has captured the nation thanks to the unashamedly blunt portrayal of city-living girls in their 20s by Lena Dunham. There is absolutely no skirting the edges in this; that is for sure. Sometimes awkward, sometimes uncomfortable and yet we just can’t stop watching it. Here are a few reasons why we think you should be watching it too…

ADAM SACKLER

There’s a little bit of every guy in Adam and you will see it. Maybe not the masturbating in front of women, or indeed peeing on them in the shower, but there are definitely traits that are relatable to. He’s also a shining example of how to deal with a slightly neurotic girlfriend, which all men could benefit from.

IT’S HILARIOUS

All men have that friend who will proclaim with misogynistic prowess that ‘women just aren’t funny’. Lena will prove you oh so wrong. From the script to the acting, there is no way in hell that said misogynist friend will have a leg to stand on once he’s seen an episode.

IT’S INSIGHT INTO NO HOLDING BACK FEMALE REALITY

From sharing baths, arguing, bitching, crying and comfort eating – if you want to know what women do when you’re away then this is the show to watch, warts and all, unapologetic female reality.

IT WILL REASSURE YOU ABOUT AWKWARD SEXUAL EXPERIENCES

Whether from your youth, or still today, the brash reality that comes through in some of the sex scenes is an incredibly welcome break from the perfect sex that we are shown through Hollywood blockbusters. Instead it shows the awkward, the bad and damn right weird side of sex that many of us have experienced in life, and that’ll make you feel a whole lot better about your own sex life – trust us!

IT WILL MAKE YOU FEEL BETTER ABOUT YOUR OWN PROBLEMS/LIFE/STRUGGLES ETC

We’re not saying that you should watch Girls as a way to simply increase your own ego, but rather it draws so many parallels to the ‘real’ struggles of 20-somethings trying to make their way in the world, that you can’t help but feel a little less alone. Forget the glossy boys and girls of 90210 or Gossip Girl, the characters struggle as much as the rest of us do.

THERE’S SOME EYE CANDY

Ok, so this shouldn’t even need to be said, because Girls is about so much more than this, but you’re hot blooded males and sometimes you need an extra push to do something, so we thought we’d throw this one in. Enter: Alison Williams.
