The white shirt: the only shirt you’ll ever need
Words: Charlie Thomas
When it comes to building the perfect wardrobe, versatility is key. You’ll want to search for quality items that are easily interchangeable with one another, so that feasibly, you could get changed in the dark. This notion will allow you to take on an effortless appearance that requires minimal effort to look good. One of the key items in your new, lean wardrobe should be the white shirt.
There are of course different kinds of white shirt, yet arguably the most versatile is the oxford shirt. It can be worn both casually and formally, although it should be noted that it’s not quite smart enough to be worn in the boardroom. With its soft oxford-weave cloth, button-down collar, and twin-buttoned cuffs it is the essence of laid-back style, and should therefore be a centre piece of your wardrobe. Here are four for you to consider.
, Uniqlo Oxford Shirt, £14.90 from Uniqlo // Gant Rugger Oxford Shirt, £80 from Mr Porter // A.P.C Oxford Shirt, £150 from Mr Porter // J. Crew Oxford Shirt, £70 from Mr Porter
For ultimate value, Uniqlo offer an almost unbeatable oxford shirt, the likes of which is constructed of 100% cotton. Its flattering cut gives you plenty of breathing room too, although it is available in a slim fit should you want to go for a more streamlined silhouette. Virtually every other respectable menswear brand offer their own variant of the iconic style, although the likes of Gant Rugger, A.P.C and J. Crew all produce exemplary garments, at varying price points.
The key thing to consider when purchasing your oxford is, of course, fit. Find one that complements your body shape and you’ll find yourself wearing it more often than not. It is, after all, the only shirt you’ll need.
