Words: Gentleman's Journal

How did a small café become such an institution that it has attracted artists, writers, film-makers, musicians, sculptors and ceramicists from all over the world? Originally it was just a simple café but with a warmth and style that it attracted a growing band of both locals and visitors, until in the later 1940s and early 50s it became a home away from home to some of the most stellar beings on the planet. It had by then become a hotel where in memory of its humbler beginnings, artists would often pay their bills with something to put on the wall. Where else would you find a Léger, a Matisse, a Bonnard and a Miró, a Braque and a Picasso – all of whom have stayed here, eaten here, played here? And the tradition continues with the latest work of art designed for the swimming pool area by Irish artist Sean Scully.
While it may be a favourite hostelry of the rich and famous, it is also a home from home for families and friends who return year after year, first on their own, then with their children and then their grandchildren. Of course, the welcome is legendary, the food beyond delicious and the location as near perfect as you can get in Provence.
If they could bottle La Colombe d’Or, it would be the magic elixir that makes a hotel great. Authentic quality that is not about perfection, but genuine hospitality with exquisite taste and style.
