When news first broke that McLaren were releasing a supercar in the form of the MP4 -12C, everyone had big expectations and McLaren delivered in bucket loads, producing arguably one of the best supercars in the world. Just when you think they can’t possibly better themselves, they go and release the MP4 -12C Spider.
The McLaren MP4 -12C Spider is in essence just the old car with the roof chopped off. However this means the owner can listen to the howl of the 3.8 litre, twin turbocharged V8 engine at full throttle, adding to the already amazing driving experience.
The Spider features a retractable hard-top that folds away into a space behind the seats in 17 seconds and can be operated at speeds of up to 18mph. However this does come at a slight price, as it is 40kg heavier than the hard top version. Despite this, the Spider is by no means slow, with a top speed of 204mph and with the same 0-62 as the Coupe version of 3.1 seconds.
The Spider version also uses the carbon-fiber Monocell chassis from the coupé, which McLaren says required no extra strengthening. Like the R8 Spyder, the McLaren also features a retractable glass rear windscreen that doubles as a wind deflector when the roof is lowered.
