The chronograph has long been a part of Breitling’s history. It’s been so long in fact that this year marks the 100th anniversary of Breitling’s innovative independent chronograph pushpiece. To mark this momentous occasion, the Swiss brand have unveiled a celebratory watch, the Breitling Transocean Chronograph 1915, which is inspired by timepieces of their illustrious past.
Back in 1915, Breitling were one of the very first brands to create a wristwatch chronograph, although unlike today, the early versions featured a single push piece incorporated into the crown. This was overly fussy for some, and Breitling recognised this. To combat it they were ahead of the competition again, this time by inserting a push-piece independent of the crown. Resting at 2 o’clock, this pusher could control the stop-start function with the crown having the ability to reset the chronograph, making it easier to use.

Another benefit of this innovation was the fact that the user could measure multiple split times, which of course was perfect for a pilot. Not content with this though, Breitling actually patented what would become the modern-day chronograph we’re familiar with today. In 1934 they further simplified the layout, creating a second pusher at 4 o’clock with the sole purpose of zero-resetting. The new Breitling Transocean Chronograph 1915 takes its styling cues from the earlier chronographs however, giving it an unusual charm and elegance.

The vintage theme runs throughout the Transocean 1915. Its dial is particularly notable with its old-school logo and printed Arabic numerals in a shade or two darker than the face. The case itself is 43mm, yet with its slim lugs and bezel it will likely fit smaller than most.

Fitting with the classic aesthetic is the manually-wound, caliber B14 movement, which can be spied through the case back. It’s available on a signature brown Breitling leather strap, yet we’d go for the steel mesh bracelet, which is slowly becoming a hallmark of the Transocean family.
