Watchout: Breguet Classique Tourbillon Extra-Plat Automatique 5377
Words: Charlie Thomas
Founder of Breguet and all round horological legend, Abraham-Louis Breguet, invented, among other things, the tourbillon at the start of the 19th century. You would expect then that the famed Swiss watchmakers would be rather adept (read: masterful) at creating watches with this exquisite invention housed within, and you wouldn’t be far wrong.
Breguet aren’t ones to rest on their laurels though, and they’re not content with producing the same tourbillon movements they have for hundreds of years. They constantly look to push the boundaries of design and with this, the Classique Tourbillon Extra-Plat Automatique 5377, they have created the thinnest automatic tourbillon in the world.
The movement itself comes in at an impressive 3mm and, housed within a slender 7mm case, the watch easily slides under the cuff. To accomplish this, Breguet devised a peripheral rotor made of platinum that winds in both directions of spin, and the results are impressive from both a technological and aesthetic perspective.
The face has a decidedly throwback feel, with its slim Roman numerals, distinctive hands and bezel-less case. Its straight lugs, modest crown and off-centre dial give it a contemporary edge though, and look back to the flamboyance and glamour of Breguet timepieces of the past. The watch’s true modernity is of course on show, with the state-of-the-art exposed tourbillon and engine-turned patterns of the dial working successfully in tandem.
The Breguet Classique Tourbillon Extra-Plat Automatique 5377 costs in excess of £100,000. For more information, visit Breguet’s website by clicking here.
