On first glance, this looks less like a watch than a gadget. Or perhaps an instrument for measuring outer-space science-y waves. Or something to do with deep-sea diving. Or maybe there’s a parachute folded up in there.
But, no, it is simply a watch. Although – not that simply. MB & F Legacy Machines are modern interpretations of watches by classic, eighteenth century horologists (in this case, Abraham-Louis Breguet (1747– 1823), Ferdinand Berthoud (1727– 1807) and Antide Janvier (1751– 1835)). These men all constructed clocks and watches with two balances, which, as you can see, has been followed through into this latest model.
It’s an extraordinary feat of precision-engineering. The dual regulators are transmitted by a differential to a single gear train. The majority have two separate movements. It’s also a joy to behold: beautifully symmetrical, right down to the position of the stud holders pinning the balance springs, this watch’s two flying balances are mirror images of one another.
The legacy continues into the high production standard: gold chatons, mirror-polished bevels and bridges designed with deliberate internal bevelled angles come as due. Furthermore, the names of the two men responsible for the movement (Jean-François Mojon and Kari Voutilainen) are hand engraved on the back.
This isn’t a watch for someone who wants a quick glance at his wrist. This is watch for someone who appreciates time, how precious it is and how well it is spent in contemplation of a beautiful, mysterious object.
