Formula One and watchmaking share many similar values, most notably being precision. Whether it’s the changing of gears off the start line or the mechanism inside a watch, both engineers and watchmakers share that goal of creating seamless precision. It was no surprise then when renowned watchmaker IWC Schaffhausen and Mercedes AMG Petronas announced a three year partnership, becoming the official partner of the Mercedes-Benz works team. In celebration of this new partnership IWC have release the Ingenieur collection, which is not only a new collection but a new direction for the Swiss watchmaker.
There is no doubt that IWC is one of the premier watch makers in the world and they have built up a name by producing beautiful and classic watches, however the Ingenieur collection is far away from that of the iconic Portofino collection. IWC engineers have taken their inspiration from Formula One itself, using materials such as carbon fibre, ceramic and titanium.
One of the models, the Ingenieur Constant-Force Tourbillon, has a ceramic case, which houses the newly developed 94800-calibre movement. This features two barrels that provide the energy to power the watch, including its moon phase model. The countdown scale shows the number of days remaining until the next full moon, then you have the power reserve which is displayed between 2 and 5 o’clock, which indicates the energy left in the mainspring. We love the sapphire-glass back, revealing and resembling the engine.
Whether you like the design and looks of the new IWC collection, one thing is for sure, with this much precision and the partnership, the Ingenieur Collection will be a wise investment for any watch enthusiast. iwc.com
