Words: Violet
If you, like the rest of the world’s male population were glued to the TV the other day to watch Bubba Watson cruise to his second US Masters Victory in three years, you may have noticed a couple of things. Firstly, that Bubba is completely mental, his pink driver, old fashioned dress sense and the ability to bend a golf ball in ways only us amateurs can dream of still manages to mesmerise us. Secondly, You may have done the quick mental calculation that the prize money for winning the Masters is $1.6 million. So if Bubba decided not to play any more golf he has still earned $3.2 million dollars in the past three years from just two tournaments, and that is before sponsors bonuses. Thirdly, you may have noticed Bubba’s watch, and what a watch it is!
Richard Mille made this RM038 Tourbillon specially for Bubba. It is made from magnesium alloy and features a manually wound tourbillon which is designed to resist G-forces associated with a golf swing, allowing Bubba to wear it on the golf course. It’s final party piece makes it mad, like it’s owner, as it costs a cool $525,000! But what great advertising Bubba is for Richard Mille, he wore it for all four days during the Masters, it was in clear view when Bubba sank his final putt on 18 and had a little blubba, and when Baby Bubba came trotting onto the green to be scooped up by his father, there it was again!
From his hover craft golf cart to his pink driver, Bubba brings a breath of fresh air to the game of golf, and for a man who has never received a lesson, he is quite a talent. Richard Mille have found themselves a great ambassador to wear such an outrageous piece of their engineering.
