Bernie Madoff, former stockbroker, investment advisor and colossal fraudster, was sentenced to 150 years in prison in 2009 – the maximum sentence the US judicial system can hand out. The reason? Over a course of several years, Madoff created the largest Ponzi scheme in US history, and defrauded his investors out of an estimated $18 billion.
The businessman’s story will now be told in a television film starring Oscar-winner Robert de Niro in the title role, with Michelle Pfeiffer playing Madoff’s wife, Ruth. Hank Azaria will play Madoff’s second-in-command, and the production will premiere on HBO on May 20.
