The Chronograph watch is one of the most successful movements in fine watch making history. Personally I think because it’s combination of the best of both worlds, you get all the dials and buttons that you would expect on a bulkier military watch (which are important because they make you feel more manly), whilst still having the ascetics that make it wearable at nearly all occasions. It’s this combination that means the Chronograph is often the perfect transitional watch, whether you be in the office on not.
The Radiomir 1940 Chronograph is one of the newest chronographs from the Italian watchmaker and is a testament to the brands stylish past. The new chronograph with it’s 45mm case, which was actually developed by the brand in the 1940’s, is in my view more beautiful than its bigger brother, the Luminor 1950, mainly due to the case’s smaller propositions. Ascetically, like all Panerai’s, it’s simple and elegant in design, and due to its smaller case, it is in our view one of the more beautiful designs of the new releases so far this year. Maybe due to its history, the the design actually has a sense of timelessness to it, you can imagine this watch looking as good in another 70 years as it does today.
The OP XXV calibre movement of the Radiomir 1940 Chronograph is pretty special too and has been developed at the renowned Minerva 13-22 base in Switzerland. The level of sheer craftsmanship that has gone into the movement can be appreciated through the sapphire crystal glass back. What can we say, the Italians like to show off.
The Radiomir comes in three versions, platinum, red gold and white gold, and only a limited 100 examples of each being available. In our view, the versatility of the white gold makes it the one to go for, it’s a look that can be worn with ease both in the boardroom and socially.
