Watch: All the Money in the World is Kevin Spacey as you’ve never seen him before
In Ridley Scott’s latest, Kevin Spacey plays Jean Paul Getty
Words: Gentleman's Journal
In Rome, in July 1973, Jean Paul Getty’s grandson was kidnapped in Rome. The abducters demanded $17 million in ransom over the telephone for the teenager’s safe return. This shouldn’t have been an issue: Getty had almost $2 billion. But when asked to pay for his grandson’s ransom, he first attempted to negotiate, and then refused.
It may sound like the plot of a film, and that’s just what Ridley Scott has done with the story, bringing on board actors from Mark Wahlberg to Michelle Williams to bring the stranger than fiction story to the big screen. The film, All the Money in the World, will tell the story of the weeks that followed the kidnapping, where Getty’s grandson was tortured, newspaper journalists became involved, and the billionaire famously decided he would only pay $2.2 million – the maximum amount that would be tax-deductible.
But the main draw of the movie – which runs with the tagline of ‘J. Paul Getty had a fortune. Everyone else paid the price’ – is to see Kevin Spacey as you’ve never seen him before. He’s played millionaires and is no stranger to power and manipulations – just watch House of Cards – but in his role as the elderly Getty, hidden behind layer upon layer of prosthetic, this looks set to be one of Spacey’s most emotional and gripping roles yet. Take a look.
