As a nation we have triumphed in a range of industries over the years, but the automotive world is one that we have truly excelled. Well, we used to. Britain produced a vast number of cars that could be considered among the greatest of all time, so narrowing down the very best has been a tough task indeed.
MORGAN PLUS 8, , No car is more typically British than Morgan. Looking through one of their brochures is like looking back through time, and experiencing a Morgan car in the flesh is unlike seeing any other automobile. The Plus 8 was a significant car for the Worcestershire based company and has been in production for nearly half a century, a testament to its greatness and lasting appeal.
The Morgan Plus 8 from £33,075. For more information, visit Morgan.
MCLAREN F1, , There is no car more important and influential to the supercar industry than the McLaren F1. It was nothing short of a revelation back when it was released in 1992, as it utilised state-of-the-art technology to become the ultimate driver’s car, in terms of both top speed and handling ability. Its most impressive feature was its carbon-fibre monocoque chassis (a world first), 627bhp V12 engine and, of course, its world record breaking top speed of 240mph.
The McLaren F1 costs between £3m – £8.3m. For more information, visit McLaren.
CLASSIC MINI, , Just like the McLaren F1, this terrier of a car was highly influential on the supercar world, the original Mini completely revolutionised the wider car industry. Its rallying success brought it iconic status all over the globe and, in the process, the humble four-wheeler became synonymous with British motor sport.
A classic Mini costs between £1,500 – £40,000. For more information, visit the British Mini Club.
JAGUAR E-TYPE, , When it was released back in 1961, even Enzo Ferrari himself called the Jaguar E-Type ‘the most beautiful car ever made’. Stunning from every conceivable angle, the E-Type is Jaguar’s finest ever car, and one of Britain’s too.
A Jaguar E-Type costs between £35,000 – £250,000. For more information, visit Jaguar.
ASTON MARTIN DB5, , If it’s good enough for James Bond, it’s good enough for us. The Aston Martin DB5 may well be the most beautiful car of all time and it’s also one of the most recognisable, after being immortalised in film. All of this beauty will set you back though, as a pristine DB5 can fetch well over £500,000 in today’s market.
An Aston Martin DB5 costs between £400,000 – £1.2m. For more information, visit Aston Martin.
