On the road: the only pieces you need to travel in style
Words: India Gladstone
Travelling is an essential part of life – that goes without saying. But what doesn’t (apparently) is the style you choose to adopt while doing so. And no, we’re not talking about returning from your gap year as a walking, talking tragedy. We’re talking about you, right now, as a fully-fledged adult getting on a plane wearing a full grey tracksuit and carrying around the sports bag that you used at school. And don’t tut your head and pretend that you don’t do that, because last weekend I was at Heathrow and I was baffled by the sheer number of perfectly respectable looking gentlemen who were still dressing like they were 15, just because they were about to get on a long-haul flight.
Wanting to be comfortable on the plane does not mean that you automatically need to let your style slip, and trying to remain a gentleman while you travel does not mean that you have to travel in the same clothes that you wore to work that day or intend to wear to your meeting when you get off the plane. I’ve seen far too many men squirming in their suits on a long-haul flight, which is not only unnecessary, but also pretty bad for the suit in question. If you have a meeting as soon as you land, ask the air hostess to hang up your suit and slip into something a little more comfortable…
