Travel – Hotel Astoria, St Petersburg

Imperial grandeur in an historic setting.

Monumental is a word that could help describe this hotel and its setting – the building is big and strong and indeed has witnessed much. It opened just before the Bolsheviks began their rout on the Romanoffs and since that time has hosted presidents and plutocrats, and cultural and historical icons.

Therefore, guests are in no doubt that this is a serious hotel – which can be witnessed in the comfort of the rooms, the authentic cuisine in the Davidov Restaurant (especially in the choice of vodka and caviar) and the levels of service throughout. The Astoria is part of Rocco Forte Hotels bringing with it all that implies, which includes attention to detail in everything from design and decor to delivery. There is for instance, a Kandinsky original in the Kandinsky Bar.

And, of course its location is spectacular – in St Isaac’s Square right next to St Isaac’s Cathedral with its vast dome and richly decorated interior, just around the corner from the Winter Palace and the Hermitage, but a short distance from the Marinsky Theatre. A visit to all of these is a must. The hotel’s concierge will organise tickets for the ballet or opera…but ask for these when you book your room, not when you arrive, to ensure you are not disappointed. After such exigencies you will of course need to recover with a perfect vodka or two in the lobby or bar.
