Sometimes, the plane journey can be the most enjoyable part of a holiday. You can put your feet up, rifle through the books and magazines you bought at the airport, use the mini products in your in-flight wash bag. It’s a place where you cannot be bothered and beleaguered by phone calls and emails. A Boeing 727 which was salvaged from San Jose resting place is the ultimate destination for the traveller who loves to travel. Perched atop a tree canopy, it has views over the forest and the sea. But don’t think comfort is scrimped on – the 727 has been decked out in a luxury fashion with two air-conditioned bedrooms (with three queen-size beds between them), dining area, terraces and flat-screen TVs. Each room has a private bath, and there’s a kitchenette for when you get peckish.
Should you decide to venture away from the 727 to eat, there are four restaurants on ground level, one of which, El Avion, shares the aviation theme.
The 727 is also a wonderful place to enjoy nature – instead of the usual view of clouds, the sights out of your window could include sloths, toucans, coatis and monkeys. The beach is half a mile away and the hotel is surrounded by the Manuel Antonio National park. For those seeking adventure, there’s sport fishing and surfing available, and off-site you can go dolphin spotting, zip-wiring and white water rafting, among many other activities.
Personally, though, we’d just let the view and the atmosphere sink in, enjoying the original experience and occasionally sipping on a gin and tonic. The only problem might be that there isn’t an air hostess to bring us another one.
