The travel apps you’ll actually use
Words: Gentleman's Journal
There’s a big difference between downloading an app and actually using it. It’s very easy to do the former – more often than not when it’s been recommended to you – but harder to follow through with the latter. You need to know that you’re taking up valuable space on your phone with an app that’s actually going to serve you in all the ways that it’s promised. And tried and tested, here are those that are worth your time, that will help you on your travels and that will get you from A-B in style:
Air BnB

What: In our eyes, no gentleman should travel without AirBnB in his pocket. Need a room or an entire flat at the click of a button? AirBnB has your back and will always get you out of every sticky situation where you’ve forgotten to book a room for the night, or for when spontaneity gets the better of you.
Why: If you’ve yet to use AirBnB, you need to rectify that right now. There’s nothing that gives you this much choice (in terms of location, price and property type) that you can literally book the day before (or the day of) travel. Plus, unlike a lot of its competitors, it’s incredibly easy to use and nice to look at – something that’s often hard to come by.

Holiday Pirates

What: If you want a cheap, very last minute holiday where you can pay for everything (flight, transfers and accommodation) all in one fell swoop, Holiday Pirates is the app for you. It scans all of the best deals out there at any given time for the destination you want to go to, and picks the best deal of the bunch, thus landing you with an extremely affordable holiday at the click of a button.
Why: Because there’s no greater feeling than knowing you’ve secured an amazing deal on an amazing holiday without having to walk into your high street travel agent.

Mile Hi

What: Have you ever found yourself alone on a 10-hour flight with no one to talk to and nothing to do after you’ve exhausted the film selection on board? Well, Mile Hi is here to solve all of your lonely woes: see it as a Facebook messenger, except for people you don’t actually know – yet. Enter your flight details and view the rest of the people, connected through the app, on your flight.
Why: Because when boredom strikes and you’re alone, you’ll be thankful you’ve got someone to talk to.

Snapseed

What: Finally, an easy-to-use photo editing app that does the hard work for you and makes your travel photos look like they were taken by a professional and that doesn’t require complicated edits.
Why: Because when you get home, you’ll be grateful for the fact that you’ve actually taken the time to edit incredible photos.

Periscope

What: If you’re into instant video but you want something with more longevity than the likes of Snapchat (which delete your video swiftly after 24 hours), Periscope is what you need. It lets you live stream your videos to the world and to any of your followers and the click of a button, so if you’re travelling the world and want to share exactly where you are with friends and family, Periscope is the perfect app for you.
Why: Because video can capture something that photographs never can, something that will instantly transport you back to where you once were – at the same time as instantly showing your followers what you’re doing and where you’re travelling.

Skyscanner

What: Never get ripped off again on over-priced flights offering you ridiculously high fees when another airline that you didn’t know is offering the same flight for a much lower price. Skyscanner scans all flights across the internet to give you the best price to the destination you’re trying to get to, in real time and at the speed of light.
Why: Because you can’t beat an amazing deal.
