Despite being defined by sensibilities that stick to the technical and the serious – as evidenced in its iconic hermetically sealed waterproof watch of the 1950s – Tissot can showcase a playful spirit, too. This August, the Swiss house has unveiled a special-run PRX model that pays reverence to UFO Robot Grendizer, the result being the coming together of two products rooted in the 1970s.
The piece is a lovely contrast of styles – Swiss craft with manga pop culture – and is aimed at horology enthusiasts, new fans of Japanese anime, and those already familiar with the genre who are seeking out a nostalgic hit.

Overall, a classic feel comes courtesy of the 40mm stainless-steel case and muted blue dial, the colour of which is influenced by the blue of Grendizer. In contrast, punchy, graphic accents are seen in the glow of the lumed portrait of the robot, and the rotor is uniquely engraved – in the upper flange, the text reads ‘UFO ロボ グレンダイザー’, which is the original title for Grendizer.
Keeping things ticking is the Powermatic 80 movement, and there is a power reserve of up to 80 hours; meanwhile, the Nivachron balance spring facilitates accuracy. Durability is also provided via the throwback-style metal bracelet. (According to adverts from the previous century, the line of PR watches was meant to be used ‘On the track, in the air, in the water – everywhere!’)
Rather notable for collectors is that the ingenious box in which the watch arrives is modelled on the Spazer, Grendizer’s instantly recognisable UFO, with the sleeve exhibiting creator Go Nagai’s original illustrations.
“It’s fascinating that UFO Robot Grendizer and the Tissot PRX both started in [the] 70s,” said Go Nagai. “They come from different worlds, but the collaboration brought out a special meaning… By merging UFO Robot Grendizer’s fight for a better future with the PRX’s journey of marking life’s milestones, we’ve crafted a watch that is a true tribute to their legacy and heritage.”
