The Pick: Your ties are boring, it’s time for an upgrade

The Pick: Your ties are boring, it’s time for an upgrade

Words: Hamish Roy

Arguably more protean than its bladed brother, a knitted tie can add a real sartorial kick to an outfit. Less formal than your usual tie, it’s a good option for those who want to wear a suit, but are concerned about looking a bit ‘boardroom’. It’s also well suited to smart-casual situations, teaming particularly well with a sports coat and chinos – and you won’t look like you’re on your way to the clubhouse, either.

This example from Lanvin is crafted from richly textured, lustrous silk. The width is just right – not too narrow – and the burgundy hue will pair well with a variety of jacket colours. Wear yours in a not-too-perfect four-in-hand knot, allowing the back blade to hang loose (outside of the fastening loop, if there is one). Perfection isn’t the aim here; asymmetry injects a little individuality and can stop a smarter outfit from looking stiff.
