The 72nd Golden Globes awards, honouring the best cinema and television of 2014, was attended by Hollywood’s most glamorous people last night. The films Boyhood and Birdman led the pack in terms of nominations and both scooped up a few awards. For television, Fargo, The Affair and Transparent were all nominated for multiple categories and all won two apiece. After the recent tragedies in Paris, the 72nd Golden Globes had a quiet, reflective atmosphere and many of the actors, actresses and directors present wore tokens of solidarity to show their support.
During the emotionally charged show several winners gave rousing speeches that credited friends, family, colleagues and strangers with the success that they were enjoying. Ricky Gervais, who has hosted the awards ceremony three times before, presented the award for best actress – comedy or musical to Amy Adams and amused the crowd with his trademark disregard for celebrity. The speeches were something else though and we’ve included our three favourites below.
