The top 10 destinations Britain has to offer this winter

Words: Honor Scott

The current weather and mood in Britain might have you wanting to make a dash for the nearest airport, but unfortunately this isn’t always the most practical option. Whilst it might be hard to believe at times, there really is no need to despair about being stuck this side of passport control. So take a moment, gentlemen, to appreciate the destinations our own country has to offer, and perhaps gain some inspiration for your next internal trip.

1. The Scilly Isles

scilly isles

The warmest place in Britain; need we really say any more gentlemen? The Scilly isles generally only suffer two frosts per winter, so you would be unlucky to experience one during your stay, and the occasional vicious storm is contrasted with idyllic white beaches and towering palms.

2. Portmeirion

With Mediterranean architecture inspired by the Ligurian Riviera, and a Gulf Stream-enhanced microclimate, Portmeirion has you doubting that you are in fact on the cast of northern Wales.

3. The North York Moors

Whilst it doesn’t sound the most inviting of locations, take a trip up north to ‘God’s own county’ to discover its wealth of luxury accommodation, exquisite food, and of course spectacular scenery.

4. Pembrokeshire

Head out to the coast or hole up in the depths of the Welsh hills whilst getting a winter dose of vitamin D in one of the sunniest places in the UK.

5. County Antrim

antrim

Giant’s causeway, cosy pubs nestled amongst the picturesque Irish landscape, and awe-inspiring sunrises and sunsets that will make you wish you owned a better camera.

6. Edinburgh

If it’s a city break you fancy, then head to Scotland’s capital this festive season for a few days of mulled wine, gothic architecture decked out in dazzling fairy lights, and total immersion in local traditions.

7. The Lake District

It might be the wettest place in England, but catch it on a good day and you will see why it has inspired so many. Dramatic fell views punctuated with idyllic hotels and cosy pubs

8. Cotswolds

cotswolds

Archetypal rural England, straying innocently into the 21st century out of another era. Go for the ultimate winter escapism and find yourself a country cottage for a few days.

9. Oban, Argyll

oban

A busy little harbour town in the west of Scotland. Immerse yourself in an alternative world; lively restaurants, deserted white sand beaches and ferries to the Inner Hebrides slipping in and out of the harbour, all overlooking the Firth of Lorn.

10. Boscastle, Cornwall

A village and fishing port on the north coast of Cornwall, Boscastle is an unspoiled Atlantic village perfectly suited for a winter getaway. Think rugged clifftop walks overlooking temperamental seas followed by a meal by an open fire. One to refresh the soul.
