Now that we are deep into June, there’s little under a week to go until one of the biggest sporting events on the calendar. Horse racing fans are gearing up for Royal Ascot, the annual event that pits the finest riders and most powerful horses against each other over five days of non-stop action. We’ve already gone over how to dress for Royal Ascot, the best-dressed royals as well as an insider’s guide to Royal Ascot, but now we’re going to delve into the Royal Enclosure itself.
The most exclusive part of the entire event, the Royal Enclosure is iconic to say the least. Originally conceived in 1807, when it was introduced for the running of the first Gold Cup, the space was put aside for family, guests and the Household of King George III.
Not much has changed since then either, as the strict dress code and general rules are all still very much in effect. Membership continues to be by invitation only, too, and you can only gain entry if you’re a guest of somebody who’s attended at least four times. If you do manage to get on board though, there’s not a finer place to watch the action from, and of course, you’ll be in vicinity of the Royal Family. What’s not to love?
When in the Royal Enclosure though, etiquette is of utmost importance. Of course, by now you should know what to wear. If not, you can check our clothing guide out here. In short, morning dress is essential, and top hats and waistcoats should be worn at all times.
In terms of etiquette, there are some simple tips you should abide by too. You can ensure the landed gentry will turn out in droves, so no kissing people on the cheek twice like our continental friends. Instead, a quick peck on the cheek for women and a stern handshake for men will suffice.
As always, it’s considered rude to continually check your watch, but a timepiece is definitely recommended. If you’re looking to make a purchase, we’d go for a Longines watch, as they consistently blend sophistication and elegance perfectly. They’re Official Timekeeper to Royal Ascot too, so you can show off to your mates when Longines branding is on show throughout the event.
