Words: Oliver Jarvis
As we have previously given our pick of the 20 films that every gentleman should watch, we’d thought we’d take the next step and select our pick of the quotes that every man should know…
An index of quotes is as useful to a man at a dinner table as an Argos catalogue is to a kid compiling a Christmas list – something he can always refer to. Quotes are great. If used correctly in conversation – no matter how cliché – they can have a profound meaning and make you look like a man who knows his Rioja from his Malbec, his Ochre from his Tawny or his Whippet from his Greyhound.
To help you expand your inventory of quick-fire quotes we give you our pick of the best from the movies that we feel every man should know.
“Get busy living, or get busy dying.”
Soi-disant innocent banker Andy Dufresne’s profound conversation with fellow inmate ‘Red’ is a must know for every gentleman who’s ever in need of a little inspiration. Perfect words for comforting a friend who’s put off by his pipe-dreams.
“I will look for you, I will find you, and I will kill you.”
The quote made famous by Liam Neeson is often used in irony, but if you’re ever considering taking revenge on someone who has done you wrong, then there are no better words.
“…Bond, James Bond”
As introductions go, Sean Connery’s cool entrance as Bond in Dr. No is an all time fan favourite.
“My mama always said. Life was like a box of chocolates; you never know what you’re going to get.”
The man that will teach you that life is so simple. Try referring to this quote whenever you feel like giving something new a go.
“You talkin’ to me?”
Ever in a rough situation on a night out… there’s no better words for acting ‘all tough guy’.
“I’m gonna make him an offer he can’t refuse.”
Marlon Brando’s portrayal of gangster Don Vito Corleone is widely regarded as one of the best in cinema history; when using this quote, attempt the ‘Corleone Jaw’.
“I love the smell of napalm in the morning.”
It’s not often that you get to refer to the smell of Napalm in East London. We think, for comic effect, you should replace the word with something a little more extreme.
“Of all the gin joints in all the towns in all the world, she walks into mine.”
A handy quote to refer to for the heartbroken lover. If you’re ever love-sick and moaning ‘why her’, then consider this one.
“You’re only supposed to blow the bloody doors off.”
Got someone in your group that always gets it wrong? Aim this quote at them.
“It was beauty killed the beast.”
A melancholic ending to an evening, holiday or time with the grandparents. Use this quote to put everybody to ease (they won’t understand what you’re on about either).
