The loss of a legend: Remembering Lou Reed
Words: Harry Jarman
This week saw the loss of a true rock icon, a man who didn’t care about the media or what people thought of him. He just did his own thing and in turn produced some of the most epic songs of the last century.
Reed’s former Velvet Underground bandmate John Cale wrote on his website: “The world has lost a fine songwriter and poet… I’ve lost my ‘school-yard buddy.” Whilst David Bowie’s Facebook just had the words “old friend”. The Who also paid their respects with a tweet that read “RIP Lou. Walk on the peaceful side.”
Lou Read was an admitted drinker and drug user for many years with many of his songs including themes of drug addiction, prostitutes and sexuality. He was one of the most compelling artists of our time and considered a master when it came to song writing.
As the Velvet Underground frontman even said himself “there’s a bit of magic in everything, and some loss to even things out”, his death maybe a huge lost, however through his music the magic will always live on. Rest in peace Lou Reed.
