The greatest movie cars of all time

The greatest movie cars of all time

Sometimes it’s not the actors that shine on the silver screen, but rather the automobiles. As is so often the case, cars have the ability to take centre stage, leaving the kind of lasting imprint an actor can only dream of. There are the obvious choices, yet there are some machines that have flown under the radar for far too long. Here are the greatest movie cars of all time.

PORSCHE 928 – SCARFACE

movie car - TGJ.01

Back in 1983, the Porsche 928 was the height of sophistication and performance. Purchased by the infamous Tony Montana once he had finally made it, it seems like the perfect car for a cocaine-snorting, gun-toting Miami gangster.

FORD GRAN TORINO – GRAN TORINO

movie car - TGJ.02

When a film is named after a car, you know it has to be special. The automobile in question was Walt Kowalski’s pride and joy in the 2008 drama, and it’s about as stylish as an American muscle car can get. Typically boasting a 7.0-litre V8 engine, they are as powerful as they are good looking.

LAMBORGHINI MIURA – THE ITALIAN JOB

movie car - TGJ.04

Whilst the stars of the original Italian Job were obviously the trio of Minis, it’s the opening scene that will forever stay in our minds. Cruising through the Italian Alps, Roger Beckerman pilots an orange Lamborghini Miura to the sound of Matt Monro’s On Days Like These. It was basically a dream until he crashed and burned in an Aosta tunnel.

FERRARI 250 GTO – VANILLA SKY

movie car - TGJ.03

Given that it’s one of the rarest, most valuable cars on the planet, the 250 GTO that Tom Cruise drove in Vanilla Sky was actually a kit car based on a Datsun Z from the late 70s. Skim over this small detail though and seeing Cruise drive along an empty Times Square in the howling V12 is quite a spectacle.

PORSCHE 911 (930) TURBO – NO MAN’S LAND

movie car - TGJ.05

We’re big 911 fans here at The Gentleman’s Journal, so the chase scene in No Man’s Land ranks highly in our books. Seeing its notoriously snappy chassis scamper out of the car park and eventually outrun the cumbersome Camaro in-chase is wholly satisfying, making us want to get behind the wheel of one more than ever.

FORD MUSTANG GT – BULLITT

movie car - TGJ.06

Steve McQueen was a noted petrolhead, and in seminal movie Bullitt, the Ford Mustang GT used fitted him down to a tee. Arguably the best-looking, most iconic American car ever, it starred in one of the silver screen’s finest driving chases, with the King of Cool himself performing many of the stunts.

ASTON MARTIN DB5 – JAMES BOND

movie car - TGJ.08

Of all the cars featured in film over the years, none has had a greater impact than Bond’s Aston Martin DB5. One of the most visually stunning cars ever made, it’s the perfect match for the suave secret agent and has featured in a number of his films, most recently Skyfall of 2012. Although synonymous with the franchise, the DB5 is an iconic car in its own right, now demanding prices upwards of £1 million.
