Diary – Tommy Hilfiger and Esquire kick off London Collections: Men

Men’s Fashion Week is like an old fashioned cocktail, you don’t know you need it in your life until the date comes. Suddenly, without a choice you’re there, enjoying the company of industry professionals, up-and-coming designers and those iconic designers none of our wardrobes would be complete without. This was the case at The Zetter Townhouse, 49 St. John’s Square last night as Esquire and Tommy Hilfiger joined together in celebrating Hilfiger’s Autumn Winter 2013 Tailored collection.

As a long-time admirer of London’s menswear style Tommy Hilfiger explained why the event was so important. “I am delighted to be here in London to celebrate my Fall Winter 2013 Tailored Collection during London Collections: Men. England is very close to my heart, and has always been a great source of inspiration to me with its rich heritage of tailoring. It’s an honour to be able to lend my support and celebrate the incredible talents in menswear design and I am proud to be one of several international brands who will be in the Capital to extend my support to London Collection’s: Men on a global level”, said the American icon.

While guest including Ronnie Wood, Daisey Lowe, David Gandy Riz Ahmed, Sally Humphries, Henry Conway, Jamie Hince and Tinie Tempah sipped Moët and nibbled on hors d’oeuvres of Yorkshire pudding filled with horse radish and roast beef before being tempted by goats cheese and dried olives on pancetta others decided to stick to their New Years diet regiment and overcome the temptation of food after 9pm. One industry icon told of how he “feared not being able to fit into his Hilfiger checked suit if he gave into the smells of the Yorkshire pudding.”

All eyes were on David Gandy as he worked his way around the room and he was more than happy to tell me how amazing it is that Tommy Hilfiger admires our countries heritage in tailoring and menswear. “Wherever you go men and women know Tommy Hilfiger and the amazing part is most London men take an entirely unique approach to how they wear his clothing. Now men are free to wear Hilfiger suit trousers and for their own jacket, that’s what I do, I am wearing my own suit jacket now ”

Man-about-town and London’s best dressed man Tinnie Tempah looked impeccable (as to be expected) but when asked what makes London so special for menswear he looked surprised at my question before grabbing my shoulder similarly to an old headmaster and wisely saying, “we set the standard as far as men’s fashion, we care so much when it comes to what we wear but unlike most capital cities we don’t care if it is interpreted as “wrong” or “right” as long as its true to us and we’re having fun with fashion.” And with those wise words he was quickly given a pat on the back by the adoring women as the cameras flashed around him. Without knowing it the music star summed up the evening… ‘having fun with fashion’.
