The Royal Salute Coronation Cup
Words: Patrick
It wasn’t all that long ago that the mention of polo came with a supercilious air that had people split into two camps: those who loved it and those who simply gave it no thought or consideration. But times have changed. No longer the reserve of the elite, as the antediluvian stigma once boasted, polo is growing in popularity, with the game’s prominent figures working sedulously to promote the sport across the globe, making it more accessible, doing away with prejudice towards age, gender or background. Polo is now a sport for all, whether in the saddle experiencing the adrenaline of live play or sat on the sidelines enjoying the spectacle in full flow.
If you’re yet to be converted, the English summer months offer a plethora of opportunities, and few are more all encompassing than the Royal Salute Coronation Cup. Hosted at Guards Polo Club, Great Windsor Park on July 25, guests will be treated to one of the most revered matches in the game: England vs South America. The clash of the titans.

The Coronation Cup was first played in 1911 to honour the coronation of King George V – grandfather to our current Queen. Its prestige has grown every since – HRH Prince of Wales has been in attendance for the past two years. As we here at The Gentleman’s Journal discovered while putting together our current issue, there is a fierce passion running through the game and a level of skill that resides in the relationship between each player and their ponies. It makes for enthralling viewing.
Tickets range from £20 general admission to full VIP hospitality at £385 – the latter affording guests an itinerary of indulging in a Le Fizz reception, 3-course lunch, afternoon tea and all the sporting action, before dancing the night away with exclusive access to the official After Party, which in past years has attracted the likes of Gemma Arterton, Thandie Newton and Dominic Cooper.
As ever, it is set to be a summer highlight of the British sporting calendar!
