The Chat-Up Lines That Actually Work

The Chat-Up Lines That Actually Work

Words: Violet

Oh the risky business of the chat-up line! We all know them, we all laugh at them and probably know that at the end of the day they are all a pile of crap. And yet still men use them. As a woman I can tell you that, in short, they do not work, or if they have worked for you in the past then either she was one too many cocktails down or simply not the kind of girl you’d take home to your parents. Brutal, but true. ‘The Game’ is no longer the secret weapon of men around the globe, but rather a well known play-book that woman will recognise in an instant – regardless of whether they may have fallen foul of it in the past.

Chat-Up Lines - TGJ.01

If you must insist on using chat up lines then the key to avoid looking like someone who has been around the block too many times is to take this simple advice: keep it refreshingly lighthearted and humorously flirtatious.

Delivery is everything; eye contact, confidence and a large dose of well-timed humour will see you go from sleazy playboy to charming gentleman in no time. Think of the chat-up line as a conversation starter rather than awkward one-liner.

AT ALL COSTS AVOID THE FOLLOWING…

“Are you lost? Because it’s so strange to see an angel so far from heaven.”

“If your left leg was Thanksgiving and your right leg Christmas, can I visit you between the holidays?”

“Is your father a thief? Because he stole the sparkle from the stars, and put it in your eyes.”

“Is it hot in here, or is it just you?”

THE CHAT-UP LINE SO OBVIOUS IT MIGHT GET A LAUGH (IF NOT A DATE)…

“Do you believe in love at first sight, or do I have to walk by you again?”

“Do you like raisins? How about a date?”

THE GENUINELY CLASSY ONE-LINERS THAT REALLY DO WORK…

“Excuse Me, Is This Seat Taken?”

“What are you drinking?”, – An oldie, but a goodie.

“Excuse Me, Can You Help Me With…?”, ( choosing a drink – the time – even directions, just anything that might begin a conversation will get you so much further than a cheesy chat-up line.)

“I just thought you should know that you have a really nice….”, – It might seem cliched, but follow this with a perfectly timed walk-away. Flattery will get you very far, but keep it clean gentlemen.
