It’s the biggest film industry event of the year, and in the words of Cannes president Giles Jacob, “this year’s talent guarantees the continuing existence of this institution,” so expectations are high! The 11 days of Cannes sees Hollywood’s elite immersed in a marathon of glitzy red carpet premieres, press conferences and of corse unforgettable parties! The Great Gatsby will open the festival and Baz Luhrmann is rumoured to host the ultimate after party on the top deck of a classic sailing yacht whilst Bryan Ferry’s orchestra plays hits from the incredible soundtrack, and then there is the Chopard Trophy Award’s on Saturday, where the good and the great will gather, no doubt dressed to impress.
The Festival runs from the 15-26th May and below we have picked a few of the films that are set to be the talk of the town in the coming week.
Palme d’Or: Top Contenders
Behind the Candelabra, The flamboyant excess of USA’s most beloved entertainer ‘Liberace’ is played by Michael Douglas, who is back stronger and better than ever. Steven Soderbergh is continuing his performance as renowned director of unmissable films, the common thread of underlying sexual content comes this time in the form of Matt Damon, the lavishly styled assistant and under cover lover. The film is based on 1988 book by Thorson, the cast and crew of this production have done it justice, with precision., Watch: 7th June
Inside Llewyn Davis, Cannes Royalty, the formidable Coen Brothers, Joel and Ethan with their three best director wins return with expected brilliance. Inside Llewyn Davis portrays the swinging sixties in New York, the adorable presence of Carey Mulligan who plays a folk singer is supported by Oscar Isaac, fresh from ‘Drive’. Many young actors, notably Javier Bardem have been propelled to great things by the Coen’s, so we’re intrigued to see Justin Timberlake’s role., Watch: 24th January ’14
Only God Forgives, In the words of director, Nicolas Winding Refn, “it’s an accumulations of all the films I’ve made so far,” so anticipation is running high! This film marks the second partnership of Refn and the flawless Gosling, their last blockbuster ‘Drive’ won Refn best director. This film sees a winning combination of talent in the form of Cliff Martinez’s soundtrack, Gosling’s moves in thai boxing, the sharpest tailoring and a script that portrays the story of a man who wants to fight god. One to watch – As I lay Dyeing
James Franco directs an adaptation of William Faulkner’s 1930’s novel ‘As I lay Dyeing’. He employs the narrative technique known as the stream of consciousness, whereby 15 characters piece together the thoughts and feelings of one mind. It’s due to screen in the Un Certain Regard event.
