Week 1 – The Best Country Pubs

The Bush Inn – Ovington

The Bush Inn is the kind of place one wishes to be known as a ‘regular.’ The roaring fire, quintessentially country interior and tantalising menu of solid British food satisfies every criteria of a great country tavern. A little off the beaten track and with bags of charm, year round both locals and Londoners frequent this pastoral pub.

In winter, diners relish the darting fire and are wrapped up in the cosiness of the dark wood interior as they enjoy hearty hot meals and fine wine. Summer sees the use of the picturesque garden, nicely positioned alongside a small running stream and it certainly draws in the crowds; thus unfortunately causing extreme delays with food and service most sunny afternoons. So plan your weekend accordingly allowing extra time for the meal.

The menu centres on good wholesome food; steak, fish and occasionally a special game menu, it’s difficult to leave and not feel rather full. A proper country pub should also offer a diverse range of bitters, stouts and beers; The Bush does not disappoint. A reasonable selection of wines are also available and complement many of the food menu’s offerings.

Piercing the pastry of their steak, red wine and mushroom pie, washing it back with a local beer and warming your bones by the fire is an image many will associate with an idyllic country pub. Simple yet exceedingly satisfying. We know where we’ll be on the impending winter nights.
