Published annually in April, the Sunday Times Rich List is eagerly awaited by those with an interest in business and money. Whilst it’s always exciting to see who topped it, we can’t help but focus on those who lost the most money, with millions of pounds simply disappearing like leaves in the wind. Here are the biggest losers of the Sunday Times Rich List.

Mr Ratcliffe founded his Ineos chemicals group in 1998, since turning it into an estimated $44bn turnover empire. Oil prices have been falling though, and whilst his net worth is still into the billions, he lost £700m last year because of it.

Alisher Usmanov is a seriously rich man. He owns a 30% stake in Arsenal football club and his assets alone are worth £5.2bn. He’s a generous man too, recently giving away £1.5m to help restore historic monuments in Rome.
Industry: Mining and investment, Net worth: £9.8bn, Lost: £850m

Steel has taken quite a hit in recent times, and as such Lakshmi Mittal – who made his fortune in it – has suffered. He lost over £1bn this past year, which is hard for us mortals to understand. It hasn’t impacted him too heavily though, as his net worth still exceeds £9bn!
Industry: Steel, Net worth: £9.2bn, Lost: £1.05bn
ROMAN ABRAMOVICH

Abramovich is one of the higher-profile billionaires on the planet, in part because he a) owns Chelsea football club and b) owns the largest yacht in the world, Eclipse. His fortune was made during the oil boom of the mid-nineties and although he lost over £1.2bn last year, he’s still one of the richest men on the planet.
Industry: Oil, Net worth: £7.29bn, Lost: £1.23bn
JOHN FREDRIKSEN AND FAMILY

The biggest loser this year though is John Fredriksen. He lost a whopping £2.01bn yet remains Norway’s richest man with a net worth of £7.24bn. Naturally, he made this through oil, including famously when he extracted the black stuff during the fighting of the Iran-Iraq war. A brave move, but one that has turned out well for the 70 year old.
Industry: Shipping and oil, Net worth: £7.24bn, Lost: £2.01bn
