Food & Travel – The Best Restaurants on The Côte D’Azur
Words: Violet
1. La Colombe D’Or
Set in the hills behind Cagnes-Sur-Mer, on the edge of the charming medieval town of Saint Paul de Vence – think cobbled streets, art galleries and gelateries galore – La Colombe D’Or hasn’t changed its menu in decades. The reason? You can’t improve on perfection. Baskets of the freshest vegetables precede a meal of the most delicious Provençal classics: chicken with morels, rabbit, and fresh fish. Everything is exquisite from the fig leaves gently bobbing in the wind over the terrace to the wonderfully salty butter. It’s also an amazing art gallery: previous guest include Matisse, Braque, Yves Klein and Léger who used to come and exchange paintings for meals. Quite simply one of the best restaurants in the world. la-colombe-dor.com
2. Bouchon
A traditional French restaurant in Monaco, Bouchon is a perennial favourite among the high net worth expats who live there – as well as tourists in the know. Fantastic service and a great atmosphere are the cherries on the amazing food cake. Try traditional dishes like escargots and farçis. bouchon.mc
3. La Passagère
On the terrace of the Hôtel Belles Rives, the sumptuous art deco palace near Antibes where F Scott and Zelda Fitzgerald used to stay, La Passagère is a feast for all the senses. Food is deceptively simple but the flavours are strong and true – the ripest tomates, freshest fish and sweetest fruit can be found here. bellesrives.com
4. La Bastide Saint Antoine
Set amongst glorious olive groves and overlooking the bay of Cannes, this is a must for lovers of fine dining (and incredible views). It’s pricey – lunch starts at €63, excluding drinks – but worth it for the lobster, veal and lamb which are its specialities. jaques-chibois.com
5. The Eden
The outdoor restaurant at the Hotel La Chèvre D’Or is named utterly appropriately. Eden, which operates in summer months only, looks out over the bay and as the sun sets the lights shimmer like a diamond necklace below. Don’t miss the exotic cold melon and pineapple soup. chevredor.com
