The 5 Music Apps You Should Download Right Now
Words: Gentleman's Journal
For all the audiophiles out there, there is nothing more frustrating than a poor music app. Whether it’s streaming, recognising or searching, these apps make your music-filled life a hell of a lot easier.
PANDORA, We all have our favourite radio stations, but there is inevitably going to be one DJ that favours songs that you, well, despise. Radio can now be a personalised experience though, if you download the free app Pandora. Pandora asks you to name an artist or a song that you like, and it will create a unique radio station based on the characteristics of that artist or song. It has the built in feature of being able to give a song a thumbs up or thumbs down, meaning Pandora will grow and understand your taste more as time goes on. Never has a platform allowed you to be such a music snob before, and we love it.
AMAZON PRIME MUSIC, Amazon Prime has recently launched their new app, Amazon Prime Music. As a paying member of Amazon Prime, your membership will extend to Prime Music at no extra cost. Prime Music gives its users unlimited access to over a million songs WITHOUT ADVERTS. While some of its rivals, like Spotify, have a much larger range of songs, the adverts that interrupt at every interval are beyond irritating. And Prime is still adding music, so there will be a growing range of music as time goes on. Prime Music allows you to choose exactly which songs and albums you want to listen to, or alternatively offers you expert-programmed Prime Playlists to sit back and enjoy. You can also download songs from the Prime Music catalogue to your mobile device, so that when you don’t have internet access to can still enjoy your favourite songs.
SONGKICK, If you enjoy going to gigs or concerts but never know when or who is playing, this app will make your life so much easier. This app generates a list of bands and artists to watch based on what is already in your music library and what you listen to most regularly. It then finds out when these artists are playing next and where, and notifies you. It also can compile a list of the concerts in your area, so that you don’t have to travel far for good live music. This free app says goodbye to hours spent scrolling through the internet, scouring websites for dates and ticket releases. Save yourself time and effort with SongKick.
SONGZA, Another great radio streaming app is Songza – it acts as your personal music concierge. You can tell Songza exactly what activity you are doing and it will provide you with a playlist suited to that activity. You can select a genre of music and Songza will offer you playlists curated by DJs and music experts. And another great thing about Songza is it takes quality of music into account – you can let it know what model and make of headphones you’re wearing, and it will match its levels so that you get optimal song quality. You can’t save the tracks for offline listening, which is disappointing, but the USP of Songza is its curation element, which is far from disappointing.
SHAZAM, Essential for anyone who has ever heard a song playing and not for the life of them been able to remember the name. There is nothing more frustrating than hearing a song that you love, and not being able to ever listen to it again because you have no idea how to find it in the music-sphere. Shazam really is one of the most useful apps around – not only can it identify a song after listening to a small section of it, but it also delivers a link to buying the song on iTunes, a YouTube video, and offers you an album review and biography of the artist. Gone are the days that we spend weeks singing partial lyrics to ourselves, desperately racking our brains for a title or artist, or some form of clue as to the origins of the song. And of course, it’s free. Thank you, Shazam.
