Weye Feye TGJ.04

When this was first mentioned to TGJ it sounded a bit like a Welsh person trying to say ‘wi-fi’. This observation then got us into an argument with the person who suggested it as they thought we were insulting them. After a period of much bickering and childish name calling we actually got round to the premise of what Weye Feye does.

All in all its quite an interesting prospect; this device allows you to take photographs… without being there. The device connects to your camera (DSLR to photographers) and through an app allows you to operate your camera through your smartphone or tablet. This led to much speculation and immature conjecture on how it could be used. Some of the ideas were fine: capturing a great sunrise picture from the comfort of your bed. Others were not: spying on that pretty neighbor next door without them knowing. And some were downright creepy: you know who you are and you need help! NOW.

After this fevered speculation died down TGJ was actually quite interested and decided to test out the one our friend gave us. We fixed it on to a camera that we assure you was used with the implied consent of our flatmate (and not because they had left for a weekend and left their door unlocked) and started playing around. To put it bluntly; we were impressed.

It’s not so much the picture quality that is striking because that comes from the camera itself. It’s just the ability to adjust a picture as you take it: the layout of the app is very accessible even to amateurs and the ability to add a filter or up the contrast is very quick. You can even add it to dropbox for later.

But it’s the second realisation that really impressed us: this app allows you to view both the picture and also the camera in relation to space. By this we mean that you are able to really look at where the camera is and whether that is the best place for it. When you are behind a camera you automatically narrow your view to in front of you. It’s a fairly obvious statement, but by narrowing you view you can miss the big picture (and a better spot to capture it). We admit this is getting into the realm of professional photography here but if you enjoy photography as a passion then this is not such as bad thing. You can compare and contrast different perspectives with minimal effort. All in all it’s a cool device that will change the way you do pictures… just saying.
