Tech – War Thunder game
Words: Violet
When The Gentleman’s Journal first saw the description for this we were intrigued: World War II has gone through some fairly high profile successes in video game history. With games such as Call of Duty 1 and 2, Medal of Honour Allied Assault (for our money the best opening level of all time with that D-Day assault) and the excellent Company of Heroes generally considered to be made of WIN.
There have also been some fairly epic failures. However, this can encourage copious amount of rage amongst those of a nerdy disposition so I will not mention any in case they decide to invade my inbox with viruses and hate mail. Looking at the video we found it seemed that War Thunder looked like a very violent, slow-motion flight simulator. However, a quick search on Mr Google revealed some more details: it is an MMO (Massively Multiplayer Online, aren’t they imaginative?) which can be played on both PC and upcoming consoles and set in World War II (actual not Zombie) and you can shoot planes, tanks and ships.
There are several features which we like; the first is that the online mode is cross platform. So if you have a PlayStation you can now kill PC players as well! The second is that you are not limited to one plane per battle; you choose a nation and then select from one of several planes. The Beta version has received very positive reviews and Sony like it enough to make it one of their big launch titles for PS4. The graphics are very slick and just watching the game-play above the White Cliffs of Dover made the Gentleman’s Journal very patriotic. However, what made us decidedly less happy was that this game has borrowed the evil, evil marketing scheme from clash of the clans: it’s ‘free to play’ but the cool stuff costs extra. Now some may feel that this should be punished by a week in the stocks, and they would have a point. However, despite this we really enjoyed just watching this game and will certainly be playing this come November and would certainly recommend that you join us.
