Tech – the Sony Xperia z smartphone
Words: Violet

In the past few months Sony has been busy. Really busy! In fact they have been so incredibly and phenomenally busy that bees have been told by the European Commission of Bees and Busy-ness to stop dying, get a job and be more like Sony (probably).
The source of Sony’s busy-ness has been focussed on the ‘console wars’: a conflict which will decide which square of plastic we will play FIFA 14 on come Christmas. Not content with that round of argy-bargy, this pugnacious Japanese company has also decided to go into the ‘smartphone wars’ with its Xperia range – to mixed success.
This is entirely the fault of the Steve Jobs memorial society and the men from Korea (non-nuclear variety). It’s very sad, because Sony do produce some cracking machines and we admit we’ve always had a soft spot for them. The Gentleman’s Journal’s first console was a PlayStation 2, our first computer was a VAIO and we have Bravia TVs in our houses. Now, if some kind soul could translate ‘market pricing’ into Japanese for Mr Sony then we know that we would have an Xperia.
The word ‘awesome’ comes to mind: the screen is 1080p on 5” that automatically optimises pictures to the sort of sharpness that would give an iPhone self-esteem issues. You are able to up colour saturation, contrast, HDR and noise reduction which will make your photos look like they were taken on an actual 13 megapixel camera. Burst mode, water and dust resistant and glass fibre body for all those nights where sobriety isn’t a priority. Even the software is intelligent: one-touch back up, listening, sharing and mirroring (on TVs) get around a lot of the irritation that often comes with smartphone operating systems. This is due to the quad core-processor (which is double an iPhone 5) allowing for this machine to provide a very smooth experience.
In short: a new iPhone 5 cost £525.This is over £100 less expensive (£409). The choice should be a no brainer. This phone is the best out there and if you need a new smartphone forget the Raspberry and iPhone and turn Japanese instead.
