TECH – Is This the Smartest Football in the World?

Adidas has created a football that will monitor your techniques and give you feedback on your performance. A smartphone app works in tandem with the sensor in the ball to give you pointers on how you can improve, as well as giving helpful tips on how to master the signature kicks of professional players.

The football has a sensor that is suspended within its core, which analyses the forces that the ball is subjected to during its flight. The sensor determines the speed, spin, foot-strike point and trajectory of the kick, and feeds all of this information back to the app. The app is also able to project the complete path of the ball, so that even if you are kicking it against a wall, you can gain a prediction of the entire flight.

The smart ball is designed to help you improve your kicking performance, offering advice on how to adopt new techniques as well as how to maximise the power that you apply to your kick. Your best kick of the day can be saved, meaning that your personal best can be your motivation for improvement, or alternatively you can compare your results with your friends for some competition-fuelled fun.
