Tailor of the moment: Thom Sweeney
There’s no doubt about it. Thom Sweeney are on a roll. With a client list reading like a who’s who of men’s fashion, as well as the opening of a new Mayfair outpost, there are few designers doing quite as well as the British tailoring brand right now.
Thom Sweeney was the brainchild of Thom Whiddet and Luke Sweeney who, from early on in their careers decided that creating their own brand was the way forward. Having trained under some of Savile Row’s finest cutters as well as eccentric Mayfair tailors Timothy Everest, the pair developed a keen sense of classic style, which has been infused with a distinctly modern edge.
This modernity is evident in the cut of their suits, which feature a signature high arm hole and a slightly shorter seat. Whilst not particularly overt, these subtle design cues are indicative of the contemporary aesthetic of the brand, although it must be noted that they are rooted in classic tailoring. This is no more evident than in their two button jackets, generous lapels and full canvassing.
Whilst bespoke is where Thom Sweeney have made their name, the brand’s made-to-measure and read-to-wear lines have really taken them to new levels. Stocked through Mr Porter and in their new Bruton Place store, the ready-to-wear line is an impeccable collection of timeless design, complete with checked wool overcoats, two or three-piece suits and wardrobe defining separates.
, Checked Wool Overcoat, £1,690 from Mr Porter
, Brown Prince of Wales Check Wool Three-Piece Suit, £1,750 from Mr Porter
, Slim-Fit Woven-Wool Blazer, £845 from Mr Porter // Slim-Fit Cotton Chinos, £395 from Mr Porter
The made-to-measure service is of course available at either of Thom Sweeney’s Mayfair stores, although we’d recommend the new Bruton place outpost for its eclectic design and layout. Both stores are well worth visiting though, and the outstanding service more than makes it worthwhile, whatever you’re after.
With the brand’s minute attention to detail in everything they do, Thom Sweeney are making waves throughout the world of tailoring. The opening of their latest store solidifies their place among the truly elite and we can’t wait to see what’s in store for 2015.
