Sunspel’s new collection is the solid foundation your summer wardrobe needs
Elevate your basics with the British brand’s timeless designs

Timeless style. It’s something we talk about a lot here at Gentleman’s Journal but what does it actually mean? Well, first, let’s look at some of the men who have it. James Dean, Sean Connery, Frank Sinatra – decades on these icons are celebrated for adopting looks that are as relevant now as they have ever been. And what do they all have in common? An appreciation for the classics – a great shirt, a well-cut suit and, underpinning it all, a wardrobe full of high-quality separates that fit impeccably.
And, if there’s one brand that knows a thing or two about high-quality separates, it’s Sunspel. The British brand produced the world’s first luxury T-shirt back in the 1800s and never looked back – going on to become celebrated for its outstanding fabrics and precise construction and outfitting, among others, Daniel Craig’s James Bond.
Accordingly Sunspel’s new spring/summer 2020 collection offers the perfect building blocks on which to base your warm weather wardrobe. The brand’s core Italian linen collection has been a favourite at the Gentleman’s Journal offices for years thanks to its range of casual essentials – shirts, drawstring trousers and lightweight jackets – in sophisticated colours. This season the ever reliable T-shirt and buttonless polo get an update in pima cotton linen jersey while the towelling range is extended to include a sweatshirt and a vintage-inspired camp collar shirt will be offered in the same fabric as the iconic Riviera polo.
Of course, this being Sunspel’s 160th anniversary year, there are some special editions to covet too. Most notably, the brand is celebrating its long-standing relationship with Japan through collaborations with Japanese brands 45R, Beams and N. Hoolywood, as well as sourcing fine Japanese selvedge chambray in which to rework some of its most popular summer shirts.
One key piece celebrating Sunspel and Japan’s shared passion for craftsmanship and design is the loopwheel raglan sweatshirt. Created for Sunspel on the original Japanese loopwheel machines that were used to invent the loopback fabric that has come to be synonymous with casual sporting styles, the result of this often slow and laborious process is a wonderfully soft sweater you’ll never want to take off.
