The Pick: The sunglasses that epitomise California cool
Words: Hamish Roy
As temperatures begin to move tentatively northwards, it’s time to think about investing in the appropriate eyewear. Like the newly-appearing sun, Californian eyewear brand Garrett Leight is on the rise – and climbing at a meteoric rate. The son of Oliver Peoples founder Larry Leight, Garrett cut his teeth working at his father’s firm before striking out on his own in 2011. Within a few short years, his keen eye for design, a good deal of hard graft and a smattering of timely collaborations – including one with Mark McNairy – has put the brand on the map on both sides of the Atlantic.
The Warren frame embodies the effortless style that is championed in Californian culture. A distinct nod to the frames of the 1960’s, this tortoiseshell pair has a vintage silhouette and a keyhole bridge, the latter keeping the look classic. It isn’t only the look that’s retrograde, however, but the craftsmanship too. Garret Leight eschews cheap, mass production in favour of a quality, handmade product. The standard of construction is readily apparent when you have a pair in your hand, the acetate reassuringly heavy. Both timeless in style and built to last, a pair of these sunglasses will serve you well for many summers to come.
