The summer shirts to ensure you look stylish all season
Words: Gentleman's Journal
The British summer may not guarantee long lasting heat, but it does regularly throw up hot and humid days, days that make it ever so easy to sacrifice sartorial nous for breezy comfort. Yet, gentlemen, there’s a fabled middle ground, a point on the style spectrum where you can look put together and keep cool.
Whilst it’s tempting to reach for the breeziest t-shirt and widest shorts to stop the sweat from flowing, there’s more to be said for selecting the right fabrics for the season to maintain that man about town tailored look.
Natural fabrics are a must for when the clime is kicked up a notch. Linen and cotton in particular are crucial during this time of the year. Look for lighter weight cottons and louche linens, as well as a blend of the two – depending on the occasion.
Linen is perfect for the casual occasion, the wrinkles become part of the rakish charm and whether tucked in, or not, a shirt cut the finest of flax is an upgrade on any t-shirt. When a further degree of formality is called for, a lightweight cotton will make the grade and the day in the boardroom a bit more bearable. For something a bit more unusual, terry towelling is the ultimate for holidaying ensembles, offering that much needed breathability and moisture wicking personality. Seersucker, should never be discounted either.
Outside of fabrics, sleeve length is your next consideration. The short sleeve shirt has an air of the holidaying politician or stylishly inept I.T. department about it. Ensure the sleeve doesn’t tent out and fits close to the bicep to immediately upgrade the divisive garment: a cuban collar is also a worthy consideration to work some Riviera charm into your attire. Short sleeves should never be worn in a smarter situation either and absolutely never with a tie.
These are the shirts you need to ensure your wardrobe is perfectly on point when the summer finally materialise in its entirety:
