Summer headwear for the modern gentleman
Words: Charlie Thomas
As unfortunate as it is, headwear is lost among the modern generation of men. Unless that is, you’re referring to baseball caps, of which there are many. When the term ‘headwear’ is brought up, it should conjure images of well-heeled gents from the Mad Men era, or Mediterranean playboys swanning about on the Riviera. It is the latter that we’ll tackle in this style round-up, as we dissect summer headwear options for the modern gentleman.
PANAMA
The Panama is the quintessential summer hat, favoured by dandy gents for decades. We’ve featured it in more detail here, but if you’re still unsure then let us reassure you that this is the most stylish way to combat the sun this summer.
Superfine Montecristi Panama Hat, £975 from Lock & Co
STRAW HAT
The humble straw hat has been updated here with a slightly wider brim, as well as a cotton band with one of Paul Smith’s signature patterns. It’s a holiday staple, yet can be worn with equal élan on a rooftop bar in the city.
Paul Smith Woven Straw Hat, £90 from Mr Porter
LINEN CAP
One of the easiest ways to integrate headwear into your look this summer is by donning a linen or cotton flat cap. Both of these durable materials add an interesting twist to a style traditionally made from tweed.
Florida linen cap, £90 from Lock & Co
BOATER
If you’re attending an event such as Henley this summer, a boater is a must. Whilst we wouldn’t advise wearing it around town, tradition must be respected, gentlemen.
Straw Boater, £19.99 from Zara
