Style Trend: how to go monochrome
Words: Charlie Thomas
Adding a burst of colour can sometimes transform an outfit. A dash of red in a pocket square or a flash of a patterned sock can sometimes be all the statement you need.
If you want to make an understated statement though, monochromatic is the way to go. An outfit is multiple shades of one colour is a smart move this autumn, and will make you stand out from the crowd, in the right way of course. Here’s how to do it in style.
BLUE
Blue is the easiest colour to integrate into your wardrobe. Combining multiple hues isn’t particularly unusual for the modern man, yet when you integrate different textures it will really set you apart. Notice the shearling collar of the peacoat, the soft wool of the trouser and oxford cloth of the button-down shirt.
Burberry London Shearling-Collar Peacoat, £1,695 from Mr Porter // J. Crew Button-Down Oxford Shirt, £70 from Mr Porter // Aquascutum Smythe Trouser, £200 from Aquascutum // Russell & Bromley Portobello Boot, £195 from Russell & Bromley // Tissot Heritage Visodate Milanais Automatic, £425 from Tissot
GREEN
Set to be a big trend in itself for autumn 2014, green is much more versatile than you might think. Combining emerald with dark green creates enough of a contrast, without looking washed out. The green stripes of the t-shirt creates an interesting yet casual aesthetic, making it perfect for the weekend.
Mackintosh Dunoon Cotton Rain Coat, £875 from Mr Porter // Richard James Cavalry Twill Trousers, £275 from Matches Fashion // Reiss Sandy Classic Stripe T-Shirt Emerald, £39 from Reiss // Clarks Originals Desert Boots Ebon Vintage, £95 from Clarks
BLACK
We recently discussed how important it is to invest in a quality leather jacket. This outfit is proof. When combining black, the trick is, as always, to combine different textures. The buttery soft leather jacket, the pure cotton t-shirt and the washed organic denim jeans really take this ensemble to the next level.
Lewis Leathers Corsair Jacket, £730 from Lewis Leathers // Nudie Jeans Steady Eddie Organic Denim, £120 from Mr Porter // Sunspel Short Sleeve Black T-Shirt, £55 from Sunspel // Church’s Beijing Chelsea Boot, £300 from Harrods // Breitling Transocean Chronograph Watch, £4480 from Breitling
