Style – The Summer Shoe Guide
Words: Charlie Thomas
The warmer months are an exciting time for menswear. They give us a chance to experiment with different materials and colours in ways that just aren’t possible when it’s pouring down with rain. This notion of course applies to shoes as well, so when choosing your new pair of wheels for the summer, be sure to think outside the box in order to make a statement that’s worth talking about. That doesn’t mean purchasing the loudest, most obnoxious shoes you first lay your eyes on though. Instead, take a subtler approach and look out for contrasting soles and seasonal materials such as suede or nubuck. The classics should never be overlooked however, and that is why it can be so hard to narrow your purchase down to just one pair. Luckily for you though, we’ve done the hard work and compiled a list of three styles that are well worth considering if you want to look seriously sharp this summer, so check them out.
ESPADRILLES

Castaner Suede Espadrille Boots (£110) – mrporter.com

Christian Louboutin Woven Espadrilles (£335) – matchesfashion.com
Having gained in popularity over the last few years, espadrilles are now a go-to option for gents the world over come summertime, thanks in large part to their easy-going charm. Minimal styling allows them to be dressed up or down with ease but it’s the details that set them apart, like the laces on this Castaner pair or the intricate woven Raffia of these Christian Louboutins.
TASSEL LOAFERS

AMI Tassel Loafers (£365) – mrporter.com

Church Keats (£385) – herringshoes.co.uk
If you are going to invest in just one pair of shoes this summer, the tassel loafer has arguably the strongest case. A truly timeless design, it will bring an air of Italian-inspired sophistication to any ensemble, no doubt elevating your entire look. Although they come in a huge range of colours and finishes, we’d recommend you go for a pair in mid-brown or tan leather as that’s when they’re at their most versatile.
SUEDE BROGUES/DERBIES

Mark McNairy Crepe-Sole Suede Brogues (£310) – mrporter.com

A.P.C Suede Derby Shoes (£280) – mrporter.com
There’s no denying the prominence of leather when it comes to shoes, but when the weather heats up there’s really no better material than suede. It’s more wearable than you might think and, like leather, it actually gets better with age, developing a natural patina over time that screams nonchalance and effortless style. Of course, no sartorially inclined gent should go without a pair of quality brogues and these Mark McNairys fit the bill perfectly, especially when finished in exquisite grey suede with a seasonally appropriate crepe sole. The A.P.C derbies offer a sleek alternative, and would look great when paired with tailored trousers and a crisp white shirt.
