What Your Shoes Say About You
Words: Charlie Thomas
It’s no secret that your choice of shoes can make or break your outfit. It is often said that your shoes are the first thing that people notice about your choice of attire, and of course, we can’t forget the fairer sex’s love affair with them. The great Hardy Amies once said, ‘it is totally impossible to be well-dressed in cheap shoes’, and while this is not strictly true – it is possible to pick up a perfectly reasonable pair of wallet-friendly shoes – what must be noted is that your choice of shoes will dramatically alter the end result of your outfit.
TRAINERS, , The topic of trainers in menswear can often cause debate. For the traditionalists, they have absolutely no place in your wardrobe whereas, on the other end of the spectrum, there are those that think they add just the right element of informality. Whatever side you fall on, some rules are set in stone though. Under no circumstances should you wear trainers with your suit on the morning commute, as you will look like a moron and grown men who insist on wearing loud, brightly coloured trainers always look as though they are trying too hard. If you are going to wear trainers though, stick to minimal styles in either black or white and avoid the atrocities pictured above.
SANDALS OR FLIP-FLOPS, , Even more controversial than trainers is the use of sandals and flip-flops within menswear. Whilst it is possible to find a good quality, inoffensive pair of sandals, those who wear them will likely be frowned upon. Flip-flops on the other hand are one of the most hated pieces of footwear amongst the sartorially aware. If you are caught wearing them anywhere other than at the beach, expect to instantly lose all respect and be placed in the same category as wearers of football-shirts and three-quarter length shorts. For those looking for a summer appropriate, slip-on shoe we recommend espadrilles for their understated, stylish design.
BROGUES, , These timeless favourites tend to give off a well put-together aesthetic, brogues are the choice of many style-conscious gentlemen all over the world. Unfortunately for those with a tight budget though, you very much get what you pay for. Given their immense popularity, numerous cheap and nasty variations have saturated the market, so to avoid looking like a has-been TV presenter, go for a welted sole and 100% leather.
LOAFERS, , Perfect for the summer, but equally good all year round, loafers give off a sleek look if worn correctly. Stick to penny and tasselled versions at all costs as, rather like brogues, there are a number of truly shocking examples around.
BOOTS, , Boots are a masculine option that can transform a look into something truly special. Black leather Chelsea boots exude rock-star vibes, whilst desert boots are relaxed yet elegant and wingtips will finish off any suit with aplomb.
