Built in 1955 as the heir to an illustrious branch of the Jaguar bloodline, the XK 140 is a true British thoroughbred. Arriving during an exceptionally successful decade in Jaguar’s racing career, it came as the successor to the field-leading C- and D-types and, more directly, the incredibly successful XK 120 – all three of which were driven to no fewer than 5 Le Mans victories between 1951 and 1957. The XK 140, then, is a car built by a manufacturer at its very best – a car in which looks are matched by speed, power by fine-tuned handling.

As the direct successor of the field-leading XK 120, this car stands as evidence that Jaguar were shrewd enough to stay well away from tampering with a winning combination. Indeed, no drastic changes were made to either cosmetics or he 3.4 litre, race-winning engine. Any changes that were introduced were made in order to improve comfort and handling: the suspension was refined, the brakes upgraded and rack-and-pinion steering installed. Perhaps the most welcome change for the latter-day enthusiast was that the engine was moved forward by 3 inches, making for a comfortable car that is far better suited to long pleasure drives.

This particular XK 140 is the Drophead Coupé MC, a slightly sportier variant with a twin exhaust, adjustable fog lamps, windscreen washer jets and cylinder heads borrowed from the C-type racing car. These extras make it both rare and highly coveted – an example in this condition is highly desirable, not least when viewed from an investment perspective.
