The most striking coffee tables for your bachelor pad
We round up the best pieces of furniture to put your feet up on
Words: Jonathan Wells
Forget your sofa, the coffee table is the centre of your living room. Mugs, meals and magazines alike are set upon this piece of fundamental furniture, so surely it pays to invest. Buy a striking, iconic example, and then every time your guest puts down their mug or glass, they’ll be left in awe of your interior decoration skills.
Mid-century inspired, this rectangular coffee table may be conventional in shape – but not in design. With a beautiful satin brass-finished frame and honed black marble top, the Rufus also includes a beautiful walnut bottom shelf.
This is where fashion meets function. Linley’s offering in the coffee table race sees an innovative oak frame support a large, round – and removable – leather tray. And, not only does this make moving the Ebury easy, it also allows for customisation (the tray is available in black, red and grey – among others).
A thoroughly modern coffee table, this is pure functionality wrapped in great design. You can hide your remotes, charges and cables in the hollow heart of the Chivas, and the slim table tops have the ability to be raised up to create the perfect height for afternoon tea or other events.
From Tom Faulkner, the Balzac Coffee Table is a reflection of the designer’s avid interested in geometric and sculptural forms. The strength of sheet metal is exhibited here, with the base crafted from steel and the top in bronze – which comes with the option to be either aged, polished or brushed.
This may seem a little alternative, but bear with us. A glamorous – yet thoroughly masculine – offering, this is a definitive blend of old and new materials – an angular solid brass frame with a padded, deep-buttoned top upholstered in lustrous aged hazelnut leather.
A true statement, and utterly timeless, this oval coffee table has clean, current lines and is a perfect union of materials. With a beautiful quartered panelled Canaletto Walnut veneered top sitting upon a striking brushed matt bronze structure, the top is also available in high quality Italian leather with defined stitching detail.
If you’re looking for something traditional – something that your whisky collection or antique globe would look equally at home on – then the Langdon is for you. A black wooden frame with rubbed edges supports at parquetry top. Looking suitably aged, this is perfect for a vintage pad – not so good for glassy and steel modern digs.
A seamless blend of modern and traditional, this coffee table would look just at home in front of an innovative modern sofa as it would before a wingback, leather armchair. Flat cut walnut veneers with a raven finish make up the top and body of the table, with metal ferrules in a vintage nickel finish capping off the legs.
