Last June Slowear, the Italian brand that puts craft and timeless style first, teased a collaboration with North Sails, the world's largest and leading sailmaker, and the label behind every America’s Cup winner since 1987. During Milan Fashion Week, at Slowear's seasonal presentation of its Spring/Summer 2024 collection, press were first given a glimpse of the collaboration.
But now it has been unveiled in its entirety. The collaboration between Slowear and North Sails is small, mind you, and the range will only include two styles. But that's not to say it's not impactful. The collection, which falls under the apt name "Urban Breeze", comprises the Newport Sailor jacket and the peacoat, both of which are exemplary of both brands' aforementioned dedication to craft and durability.
The Newport Sailor windbreaker is an updated take on North Sails signature “Sailor” jacket. The jacket is a piece of tech, and features a three-layer, 100 percent recycled, ultra-lightweight, waterproof outer, while heat-sealed stitching has been used on the inner lining and the outer pockets. When combined, you've got a totally protective shell, that can withstand whatever nature throws at you, out at sea, or on land. The jacket comes in three seafaring colourways: navy, white and cobalt.
The second piece in the collection, the peacoat, is made from a nylon gabardine, which has been embellished with a water- repellent finish. It has been tailored to fit the original peacoat design, and has been made in camel and navy.
The collaboration makes total sense. Slowear's roots begin in Venice way back in 1951, and it has an industrial history made up of artisinal skills. North Sails has pledged its allegiance to creating sails that can take on the largest seas. Both together have made a commitment to craft and durability, and that shows in their first collaboration.
And the collection speaks to the wider gorpcore trend that swept across menswear, whereby men are dressing for the trails and high seas in their everyday life. Technical gear isn't just for high performance and the wardrobe tropes of activity wear have trickled into everyday menswear. And that's what's so great about this collection. Both pieces can be worn, sure, for a day at sea, but also your morning commute or weekend jaunts.
The jackets are available to shop now at slowear.com.
